as the capital of Dalmatia. It developed on the favorable location in
the middle of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, protected by the
archipelago of Zadar's islandsfrom the open sea influences, which was of
big importance in times when maritime transport was dominant. On the
land Zadar's background is made of spacious plains of Ravni kotari, that
enables it to freely expand, which makes it different form other coastal
towns. Massif of Velebit sharply separates Zadar's area from the Lika
and continental part of Croatia, that has been changed only in the most

but yet it has each time appaeared from its ruins stronger, more
beautiful and wealthier. It has been populated by Illyrians, Romans,
crusaders, Venetians; Zadar was ruled by Italy, Austria and even France.
Today, this town represents a preserved monument of different historical
times and cultures, that built boundaries and visible outlines of its
urban look. Due to its geographical location Zadar has mild
Mediterranean climate (warm and dry summers, mild and rainy winters)
which is manifested in beautiful Mediterranean vegetation with a few
