Southern Dalmatia
is the smallest and most southern part of the
Croatian coast
The main tourist destinations in South Dalmatia
are Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Klek and the Peljesac
peninsula. Dubrovnik is the center of the
Dubrovnik-Neretva County and tourist center of
southern Dalmatia, as well as Croatia. Dubrovnik
is a city rich in history and cultural heritage,
and is therefore protected by UNESCO. Today,
Dubrovnik is one of the most visited cities on
the Adriatic. The old city is surrounded by a
monumental walls, long 1940 m an 25 m high, and
the oldest and most famous street in Dubrovnik
is Stradun.
The popular tourist destination Cavtat is 20 km
away from Dubrovnik.
Klek is a town in the northwestern part of the
bay near the town of Neum. Near Klek are located
towns Duboka and Komarna with picturesque
beaches.
Peljesac peninsula, along with Istria, is the
largest on the Adriatic coast. Its inhabitants
are engaged in wine-growing (producing Dingac),
shellfish farming and fishing, and tourism. The
larger towns on the peninsula are Orebic,
Trpanj, Ston, Kuciste. |

Islands in South Dalmatia are
Korcula, Mljet, Lastovo and Elafit Islands.
Tourism on the island of Korcula has a long tradition, and
residents are involved in wine making and fishing and
tourism. Along the shore of the island of Korcula are
located villages: Korcula, Lumbarda, Vela Luka, and in its
inland there are Zrnovo, Pupnat, Smokvica and Blato.
According to the legend, the famous Marco Polo was born on
the island of Korcula.
The island of Mljet is the greenest Adriatic island, and a
third of the island surface is a part of the National Park
of Mljet.
The island of Lastovo is separated from Korcula by the
Lastovo channel. Among the many limestone hills lie rocky
fields, and many caves, among them the Raca is being the
largest one. With the north-eastern coast of Lastovo there
are 40 non-inhabited islands and reefs, which are called the
Lastovo archipelago.
Elafit Islands are located in the vicinity of Dubrovnik on
the west side and are in fact the Dubrovnik archipelago,
named Elafiti (Greek for: stag islands), and are closely
connected with Dubrovnik and its past. Due to the natural
beauty and climate, the Elafit islands are a place to relax
and enjoy for the captains, sailors, noblemen of the
Dubrovnik Republic, and today they are very attractive area
for the tourists. In Elafiti group of islands included
island of Sipan, island of Lopud, island of Kolocep. |
